Peru is known as the “Land of the Incas” and offers some of the finest archaeological remains and ancient sites in the world with the crown jewel being the “Lost City of the Incas” Machu Picchu. But Peru is also rich in natural beauty from the spectacular peaks of the Andes, to the exotic tropical forests of the Amazon Basin and the deserts of the Northern Pacific coast. It offers travelers a staggeringly diverse geography and boundless opportunities for exploration and adventure and is one of the most complete travel destinations in South America.

About Peru

When travelling to Peru be prepared to be amazed by the rich ancient heritage and natural wonder of this ancient land. The ancient Inca sites are amazing but equally impressive is the Peruvian landscape starting with the Andes mountain range which overlooks the Amazon rainforest, and the long Northern desert shoreline.

For many Cusco will be the starting point of their Peruvian Odyssey. The former historic capital city of the Inca Empire is the gateway to the ruins of Machu Picchu which many people chose to reach by hiking the Inca Trail. This multi-day trek takes travelers to a number of Inca sites before finally reaching the Lost City. Further ancient discoveries await at the Nazca lines, a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru.

Having sated your appetite for ancient sites it’s time to explore Peru’s natural wonders. A natural starting point is the Peruvian Andes with its white snowy peaks and trekking opportunities. For the less adventurous there are 5 train lines that travel up into the altiplano, where you will be awarded with spectacular views of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake.

Next stop is Peru’s tropical mountain ranges and the Peruvian Amazon, both with vibrant ecosystems and diverse wildlife and birdlife making them popular for bird and animal watchers alike. The Northern coastline with its mainly white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and good waves, are a popular destination for domestic and international surfers alike.

For adventurers and outdoor lovers alike Peru offers a host of outdoor activities, such as trekking ancient trails and mountain ranges, whitewater rafting, paragliding, riding through the desert on dune-buggies, sand boarding and surfing.
